Frequently Asked Questions

This page is designed to answer some of the questions we are most often asked. That said, the best way for us to answer your specific questions is for you to give us a call. You can reach us at (218)-722-6271 or via email.

Do I really need a fire extinguisher?

The answer depends a lot on your situation. Many businesses are required by law to have working fire extinguishers to ensure everyone’s safety. Daycare centers, restaurants, churches, paper plants … if you operate a business, you need a properly working extinguisher.

However, many individual homeowners also appreciate the peace of mind that comes from having a working extinguisher available in case of emergency. We can’t tell you how many kitchen fires we’ve been called to put out that could have been tamed much more quickly if the homeowners had a fire extinguisher available immediately.

How do I choose the right fire extinguisher?

There are five classes and three primary types of extinguishers. Each works best in different situations.

The good news here is that you don’t have to select the extinguisher on your own. Our team of firefighters will talk with you about your circumstances and make a recommendation about which extinguisher will work best in your situation.

Why should I purchase my extinguisher through the Duluth Firefighters Mutual Aid instead of a box store?

The key here is understanding that fire extinguishers are made of all sorts of different materials and with varying degrees of quality. Some are serviceable and rechargeable; others aren’t.  As we mentioned, there are many different types and classes of extinguishers as well. And it’s important for your business to have the proper extinguisher.

At Duluth Firefighters Mutual Aid, we can help you take the guess work out of purchasing a fire extinguisher, and make sure you select an extinguisher that is going to be your best bet for the long run.

Who is the Duluth Firefighters Mutual Aid?

The organization was founded in 1927, and many of our members have changed over the past 90 years or so. However, one thing has remained constant.

We are local firefighters committed to making sure that homes and businesses are as safe as possible. We offer assistance to many other local non-profits, because we believe so strongly in the importance of keeping our community safe by providing fire extinguishers and training.
